out east. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is at sfo for an update on the response as well as continuing flight cancellations. >> reporter: several california agencies are responding, others on standby with you one problem that rescuers and travelers have having today, more cancellations to those cities that need help the most. >> i been sleeping on that little sofa over there. >> reporter: tommy is among thousands of stranded travelers waiting out sandy in an airport. he is trying to get back to new york where he is a grad student and doesn't want to miss class. he spent the night at sfo unable to change his flight over the phone. >> when i call them, the automated machines say the line is too much and i couldn't contact them and they hang up on me every time when i try to call them. >> reporter: more than 15,000 flights have been grounded and in the past two days almost 300 to and from sfo. california rescue crews, however are getting as close as they can to the storm and what's left in its wake. yesterday, the california national guard sent military airplanes, helicopter

. elissa harrington is at sfo to tell us what passengers can expect today. >>> reporter: passengers can expect more cancellations and here at sfo in terminal 2 alone i'm already counting 17 cancellations this morning on the departures and arrivals board. now, this storm has absolutely crippled air travel to and from the east coast grounding nearly 14,000 flights stranding travelers. more than 200 have been canceled out of sfo alone. the destinations affected including jfk, boston, chicago, philly, newark. a quarter of the flights in the united states pass in and out of new york so travelers all over are feeling a ripple effect. even if you are not trying to fly to the east coast, you still need to check your flight status. yesterday i spoke with a woman trying to get to idaho. her flight was canceled because of that domino effect. even travelers overseas have had to deal with cancellations and again so far at sfo more than 200 flights canceled out of oakland, jetblue flights to new york and d.c. were canceled and san jose two jetblue flights to boston and jfk have been canceled through

. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at sfo right now. cate, we know loose seats are forcing some cancellations. so the big question, how many flights are canceled and when are they going to be back in the air? >> reporter: well, michelle, 44 flights have been canceled nationwide including two here from san francisco airport and those flights are heading to miami or were headed to miami and orlando. so that's right, check your flight this morning. american airlines says they expect to have things back on track by tomorrow. now, the airline pulled 48 boeing 757s out of service to make these repairs so there will be thousands of unhappy travelers today. the repairs started earlier this week after loose seats were reported on two separate 757s that were actually recently refurbished. american airlines says they have used the same seats for 20 years without problems until now. passengers on these flights recall the moments midair as traumatic. >> seats flipped backwards. it was actually a complete nightmare. >> the wear and tear on the locking mechanism allowed them to become dislodge

on cancellations there. >> reporter: good morning, yes. all the way across the country, sfo being impacted by sandy. just got an impact -- just got an update. a total of 150 flights have been cancelled -- canceled. here is a look at the board this morning. there is a flight to washington, d.c. weather cancellations are being felt for many east coast destinations. >> sfo to six key cities, boston, philadelphia, new york, newark, washington, d.c. and baltimore. any one trying to get to those cities may have to bait several days. most of the -- may have to wait several days. other flights are feeling the effect, american, jetblue, virgin, u.s. airways and delta. the airlines are trying to book people on other flights. this storm is causing major problems causing a significant effect on the west coast. it's difficult to say how long the cancellations are gonna extend to, obviously all of the frights are -- flights are canceled for today. i think it's reasonable to expect some cancellations tomorrow. the best advice for passengers and stay in touch with their airline. >> reporter: tsa representative tol
